She imagined calling her mother and spilling the truth. “Remember how you always thought my ability to sense people was a quirk I should keep hidden? Just wanted to let you know that now I can commit murder with my mind. Nice to chat with you. How are things?”
Rayna has a secret. A secret that Damon has been assigned to track. He needs to know if the pretty pottery artist murdered her father. But while he’s investigating, more people die, and the case gets out of hand. He can’t decide if he’s supposed to save Rayna or lock her up.
I enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed with distinct personalities. There were plenty of people with motives for murder, but I might have figured it out early on anyway. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the paranormal aspect of the story. It added a lot of confusion to the investigation. The story was just as much about Damon figuring Rayna out, as it was solving the murders.
My only complaint is the underwhelming romance. While this isn’t technically a romance, it could be. There was ample opportunity for Rayna and Damon to recognize a connection. Sadly, our only hints were usually through other people saying “you like her” or “you like him”. They hardly had any physical response to being near each other, and weren’t terribly distracted by proximity. They simply didn’t express the usual tells.
Right at the end, their romance took a tiny leap. Will there be a book two? I’d love to see what the Trespassers do next, and give Rayna and Damon a change to grow that fake relationship!
