One moment, I’m impressed with your skill, and then next I’m impressed with your stupidity. I can’t decide if you’re skilled, or an idiot. Or a skilled idiot.

Shi Kai

After years of training, Sun Aranya lands her dream job as a city warden. But a mistake in the assignment results in two employees for one job. Even worse, the other warden is the annoying, handsome, brown-nosing Shi Kai.

Their boss allows the two “employees” to compete for the position though he clearly favors Shi Kai. The game is on, and if Sun Aranya wants enough money to keep her grandfather alive, she can’t lose.

While the competition between the two warriors heats up in more ways than one, magic-wielders are mysteriously disappearing.

While there are hints that this is a multicultural novel, but it tastes more like a bland western. I would have liked more garam masala or spicy curry. The characters talk like Westerners and aside from a few Asian references to mythical animals and weapons, I didn’t really feel like I was in another culture.

However, if you’re there for the slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance, you won’t be disappointed. These two are at each other’s throats. But when you start to see the soft side of Shi Kai, watch out. You’re going to fall for him.

Sun Aranya and Shi Kai’s story is completed in two books, but you won’t want to miss the next love story that starts in Princess of Shadows and Starlight. It’s just as spicy, and I have a feeling all these love stories twine together in the final book of the series.
